starting solids.

So we decided to start solids on Wednesday and so far it seems to be going okay. He is by no means an expert yet, but I think he'll get the hang of it eventually.

We started on Wednesday evening by just giving him a little bit of oatmeal cereal mixed with breastmilk. I think one of my first mistakes was not warming it up. He acted like I was feeding him poison and made some lovely gagging faces. I only gave him a couple spoonfuls before giving up, since he was getting fussy and it was almost time for bed.

Our second attempt on Thursday morning went a little better. I warmed it up this time and he seemed to have a better handle on the swallowing part. He still grimaced and gagged throughout the whole feeding though. I stuck with just a small amount, since this is all just practice for him anyways.

This morning I decided to throw bananas into the mix. The grimacing and gagging continued. Although this time he seemed more hesitant to swallow. He was in a perfectly fine mood and was "talking" to me the entire time, just didn't see the need to swallow very often. So the bananas and cereal and drool were pooling in his mouth and dribbling out no matter what I did.

It was actually kind of funny because I'm sitting there thinking, how do I make this kid swallow? I tried letting him chew on the spoon or even suck on my finger. None of which seemed to do much good. I'm guessing it will just take time for him to get used to. And practice of course.
